Choosing a wedding videographer is not the same as choosing a cake or a bouquet. You are choosing the person who will preserve the sound of your vows, the look on your mother’s face, and the way the light fell on your first dance.

1. "What is your style?"

2. "How do you work on the day?"

Will they direct you during portraits? Will they stay out of the way during the ceremony? Do they work well with your photographer?

3. "What do we receive at the end?"

Some videographers deliver one film. Others deliver a teaser, a full film, and separate edits of the ceremony and speeches.

Good sound is half the film. Ask if they use microphones during the ceremony and speeches. A beautiful image with poor audio loses its emotional power.

5. "Can we see a complete wedding?"

A highlight reel is easy to admire. A complete wedding is harder to get right. Ask to see at least one full film from start to finish.

6. "What happens if you’re ill on the day?"

It is an uncomfortable question, but a necessary one. Professional videographers have backup plans, a second shooter or a trusted network of colleagues.

7. "Why do you do this work?"

This might sound soft, but it matters. You want someone who cares about storytelling, not just someone who knows how to operate a camera.
